Group III: Deforestation and renewable / alternative energy production

a. Objective

To contribute to the fight against deforestation and the promotion of alternative and renewable energy production

b. Main identified challenges

  • Lack of political will;
  • Uncontrolled urbanization and population growth;
  • Illegal and unsustainable exploitation of natural resources;
  • Lack of means of survival outside the forest;
  • Lack of environmental education;
  • Regulatory frameworks that are not conducive to the development of clean and renewable energies;
  • Ignorance of alternative and renewable energy production resources and practices;
  • Low support in the alternative and renewable energy production sector.

 c. Solutions/projects’ ideas

  • Forest and landscape restoration projects (alternatives forests, capacity building of stakeholders, agroforestry and agroecology: conservation agriculture;
  • Land tenure security (living and housing territories of the locals and indigenous peoples);
  • Project to sell carbon credits;
  • Production of renewable energies: wind, geothermal, hydraulic, solar, etc.
  • Production of alternative energies: gas, green Makala, use of improved stoves, biofuel, etc.

d. Cooperation mechanisms

  • Public-private partnership;
  • Cooperation between universities and economic operators;
  • Exchange of experiences and guided tours in the sub-region;
  • Establishment of a network of leaders of the Congo Basin (CBLI) (objective: to seek funds to execute projects of common interest for the safeguarding of the Congo Basin ecosystems;
  • Development of cross-border projects.

e. Budget

USD 100,000 for feasibility studies.
