Group I: Ecotourism, conservation and protection of biodiversity
a. Objective
Promoting the development of a sustainable green economy based on the natural, cultural and conservation assets of the Congo Basin.
b. Main identified challenges
- Non promotion of traditional knowledge;
- Lack of environmental awareness amongst local communities;
- Marginalization of local communities;
- No existing mapping of tourist attractions and/or protected areas in the Congo Basin region;
- Lack of infrastructure ;
- Lack of harmonization of protected area conservation policies
c. Solutions/projects’ ideas
- Awareness-raising, popularization and strengthening of legal and regulatory laws related to biodiversity conservation and ecotourism;
- Harmonization of legal texts and policies in the sub-region and facilitation of exchanges between specialized structures, including inter-community exchanges;
- Promotion and management of sustainable tourism (including the tourism economy);
- Development of Community Conservation and Sustainable tourism Initiatives;
- Creation and promotion of a common destination: CONGO BASSIN DESTINATION
- Development of scientific, technical and community interconnection (endogenous knowledge) for ecotourism, conservation and biodiversity conservation.
d. Cooperation mechanisms
- Establishment of a network for communication, exchange of information and sharing of opportunities between actors in the sector;
- Organization of regional conferences / periodic international trade fairs bringing together the players of the sector.
e. Budget
150 000 USD project to map tourist sites and protected areas as well as to establishing a Congo Basin Common destination with enhanced communication.
