Group II: Waste management and recovery

a. Objective

To contribute to the fight against pollution by promoting sustainable waste management and recovery.

b. Main identified challenges

  • Lack of environmental education;
  • Institutional weakness in enforcing laws and regulations;
  • Insufficient subsidy towards the private sector;
  • Opacity in waste management;
  • Overproduction of waste;
  • Degradation of the living environment;
  • Pollution of ecosystems;
  • Shortfall related to the non-recovery of waste.

 c. Solutions/projects’ ideas

  • Promotion de l’économie circulaire par :
    • La valorisation des déchets pour la production de l’alimentation animale ;
    • La valorisation des déchets en ressources énergétiques ;
    • Plaidoyer pour l’amélioration de la gouvernance de déchets.
  • Raising awareness among the population on salubrious behaviors and sustainable waste management;

d. Cooperation mechanisms

  • Establishment of a network of actors in the sector in the Congo Basin

e. Budget

50 000 USD : feasibility studies to produce a solid Congo Basin waste management master plan leveraging experiences and expertise of congo basin conclave group 2 participants. The master plan will aim to create a closed loop society on waste management in the Congo Basin by the target of 2030 through the following:

  1. A control of waste generation as much as possible (waste minimization): advocacies toward governments;
  2. Promoting the recycling of generated waste: private sector and governments through incentivizing policies and grants;
  3. A safe disposal of waste that cannot be recycled in an environmentally friendly manner (Waster stabilization): private sector and government;

Continuous Research and Development to document and provide evidence on cutting edge solutions and discoveries in the waste management arena.
