Group VI: Socio-economic rights of local, indigenous and riparian populations and valuation of traditional knowledge

a. Objective

To enable the populations established in the Congo Basin region to enjoy their fundamental rights, preserve their culture, and enhance their well-being while supporting efforts to conserve forest and wildlife ecosystems.

b. Main identified challenges

  • Deforestation and forest degradation;
  • Conflicts with extractive sector actors;
  • Conflicts between communities;
  • Lack of mechanisms for the preservation and enhancement of local knowledge;
  • Weak leadership of Congo Basin Officials;
  • Lack of mechanisms to promote the rights of indigenous and riparian peoples.

 c. Solutions/projects’ ideas

Project to promote fundamental rights, preserve and enhance the endogenous knowledge of indigenous and local communities of the Congo Basin.

d. Cooperation mechanisms

  • Establishment of a collaborative network at the level of the Congo Basin.

e. Budget

USD 1000,000: project to contribute to the conservation of biodiversity, the fight against climate change and poverty (in the Congo Basin) through the securing of the ancestral rights and spaces of indigenous peoples of the region (pygmies and others).
