Group II: Waste management and recovery
a. Objective
To contribute to the fight against pollution by promoting sustainable waste management and recovery.
b. Main identified challenges
- Lack of environmental education;
- Institutional weakness in enforcing laws and regulations;
- Insufficient subsidy towards the private sector;
- Opacity in waste management;
- Overproduction of waste;
- Degradation of the living environment;
- Pollution of ecosystems;
- Shortfall related to the non-recovery of waste.
c. Solutions/projects’ ideas
- Promotion de l’économie circulaire par :
- La valorisation des déchets pour la production de l’alimentation animale ;
- La valorisation des déchets en ressources énergétiques ;
- Plaidoyer pour l’amélioration de la gouvernance de déchets.
- Raising awareness among the population on salubrious behaviors and sustainable waste management;
d. Cooperation mechanisms
- Establishment of a network of actors in the sector in the Congo Basin
e. Budget
50 000 USD : feasibility studies to produce a solid Congo Basin waste management master plan leveraging experiences and expertise of congo basin conclave group 2 participants. The master plan will aim to create a closed loop society on waste management in the Congo Basin by the target of 2030 through the following:
- A control of waste generation as much as possible (waste minimization): advocacies toward governments;
- Promoting the recycling of generated waste: private sector and governments through incentivizing policies and grants;
- A safe disposal of waste that cannot be recycled in an environmentally friendly manner (Waster stabilization): private sector and government;
Continuous Research and Development to document and provide evidence on cutting edge solutions and discoveries in the waste management arena.
