The Zoological and Botanical Garden of Kisangani has marked a significant milestone in environmental conservation with the launch of the Community Conservation Project. Funded by the U.S. Department of State, this project stems from the resolutions adopted during the Congo Basin Regional Conclave.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A Project Born from Regional Vision<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Congo Basin Regional Conclave, funded by the U.S. Department of State and held in April 2024, aimed to promote innovative solutions for conservation and sustainable development in the region. One of its major resolutions was the creation of the Congo Basin Leaders' Initiative, designed to support local initiatives in biodiversity conservation, ecotourism, and resource management.<\/p>

During the conclave, participants from across the region submitted project ideas, including one championed by Jean-Claude Maindo, representing the NGO Actions Against Poverty (AAP). His project, focused on protecting the Zoological and Botanical Garden of Kisangani while engaging local communities, was selected and funded by the U.S. Embassy in the DRC, fulfilling promises made during the conclave.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This ambitious project contributes to preserving the unique ecosystems of Tshopo Province, located in the heart of the Congo Basin forests. Beyond its ecological goals, it promises to have a positive social impact through its inclusive approach, which actively involves local communities.<\/p>

Jean-Claude Maindo expressed his gratitude to the U.S. government for its support:\n\"This project perfectly embodies the resolutions of Working Group 1 of the Conclave, dedicated to ecotourism, conservation, and biodiversity protection. With this funding, we can strengthen preservation efforts while involving local communities in a sustainable approach.\"<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The official launch brought together 125 attendees, a testament to the commitment of Kisangani\u2019s residents to this cause. The event featured:<\/p>

  • The planting of 20 fruit trees, symbolizing collective commitment to sustainability.<\/li>
  • Cultural performances, highlighting the connection between culture and nature.<\/li>
  • Inspiring speeches, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in ecosystem management.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    The Community Conservation Project goes beyond ecological restoration:<\/p>

    • It includes the creation of a Site Coordination Committee, ensuring participatory governance.<\/li>
    • 4,000 seedlings will be cultivated and distributed, supporting reforestation and local livelihoods.<\/li>
    • Workshops and socio-economic surveys will identify quick-impact projects and opportunities for communities.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
